Arts Students and Faculty Transition Back to In-Person Learning at Hunter College

WITH THE END OF THE MASK MANDATE, COLLEGE STUDENTS AND FACULTY IN ARTS PROGRAMS ARE ADJUSTING TO IN-PERSON LEARNING WITH PERFORMANCES, PRODUCTIONS, AND FACE-TO FACE INSTRUCTION.


ARTS CLASSES TRANSITIONED FROM SEEING HEADS AND NECKS ON SCREENS TO LIVE-PERSON INTERACTION AND CREATION RANGING FROM THE LIKES OF GROUP DANCES TO WHOLE CLASS CHORUS SINGING TO DRAMATIC READINGS OF PLAYS.


FOR JENNIE LITZKY, A SENIOR AND MAJOR IN DRAMA/THEATER AT HUNTER COLLEGE, RECOUNTS HER EXPERIENCE AND RETURN BACK TO IN-PERSON LEARNING.


"ZOOM THEATER CLASSES WERE GOOD BUT I THINK LIKE BEING IN PERSON REALLY REMINDED ME OF HOW LIKE IMPORTANT THE IN PERSON CONNECTION IS. SO I AM REALLY GRATEFUL AND TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE FACT THAT WE ARE BACK AND NOT TAKING IT FOR GRANTED."


THOUGH IN-PERSON ARTS CLASSES ARE NOT THE ONLY CHANGES ON CAMPUS. BEYOND THE RESUMEMENT OF IN-PERSON ARTS CLASSES ARTS STUDENTS AND FACULTY HAVE CHANNELED THEIR CREATIVITY AND RESILIENT ENERGY INTO LIVE ON-CAMPUS PRODUCTIONS AS WELL.


FOR THE SPRING 2022 SEMESTER, THE DRAMA/THEATER DEPARTMENT AT HUNTER COLLEGE STAGED A LATEST RENDITION OF “HAMLET”.


LITZKY, THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF THE PLAY, SAYS: "IT WAS REALLY NICE TO BE ABLE TO DO A PRODUCTION IN PERSON, AFTER DOING ZOOM SHOWS FOR SO LONG. THE CONNECTION IS LIKE SO MUCH MORE REAL IN PERSON AND IT JUST TURNED OUT SO BEAUTIFUL."


NOT ONLY HAVE STUDENTS BEEN IMPACTED BY THE UPHEAVAL FROM THE PANDEMIC BUT ALSO PROFESSORS. ARTS PROFESSORS, IN PARTICULAR, HAVE BEEN TASKED WITH DELIVERING A STRONG EDUCATION AS WELL AS PIVOTING AND ADAPTING INSTRUCTION DURING THIS TIME.


JENNIFER RODERER, A PART-TIME ADJUNCT AND VOICE INSTRUCTOR AT THE HUNTER COLLEGE MUSIC DEPARTMENT, PROVIDES INSIGHT INTO WHAT TEACHING HAS BEEN LIKE.


"I FEEL LIKE STUDENTS ARE STILL SORT OF RECOVERING FROM IT, AND I AM STILL RECOVERING IT, FROM THE TRAUMA OF IT... I FEEL LIKE THE PANDEMIC HAS SORT OF PROVEN THAT WE HAVE TO BE A LITTLE MORE OPEN WITH WHAT WE WANT TO DO WITH MUSIC AND MUSIC LEARNING."


ALTHOUGH CONTROVERSIAL, IN-PERSON LEARNING HAS BEEN MET WITH POSITIVITY AND RESILIENCE.
